Climate groups around the world celebrated on Monday. They were happy that Wales decided to leave all its coal in the ground.

Wales new energy strategy aims to get 70% of its energy from renewables by 2030.

The actions of the welsh government are very different from those of its English neighbour. They recently allowed fracking companies to take gas from the ground. Since the decision, there have been 3 earthquakes in the area.

The Welsh decision comes 2 weeks after the latest International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report. The report said governments need to limit global warming to 1.5c. If governments fail, hundreds of millions of people will suffer.

The Welsh governments’ decision is very important because of Wales historic association with coal. Wales was one of the biggest producers of coal. Around 1900, they produced 57 million tons of coal each year.

“It is an historic moment. This is the end of coal in Wales after a long association and history”, said Haf Elgar, Director of Friends of the Earth, Wales.
