Scientist says new report is scariest ever. 

New research shows that insect populations in Puerto Rican rain-forests declined by sixty times from 1970. The report was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). This is very worrying because these rain-forests are protected.

Recently, many reports have discussed the impact that humans are having on mammal species. They are causing many mammal species to die. But, this new report focuses on the effect on bugs. They too are being killed very quickly. This will continue if we don’t stop the planet warming.

David Wagner from the University of Conneticut, said the report was a real wake-up call. He called it “one of the scariest reports he has ever read.”


Bradford Lister and Andres Garcia wrote the report. They say insect numbers are declining at an alarming rate.” Since the 1970s, the biomass has decreased by 60 times. This includes frogs, lizards, birds and insects.

The temperature in the rain-forest has increased by 2.0c in the last 30 years. This seems to be causing the decrease in populations.
