The Larsen C ice shelf collapsing

A piece of ice shelf 1/4 the size of Wales will soon break off and collapse. This will affect other ice shelves in the area.

Scientists have been watching a large crack develop in the past few years. The speed of the crack has increased in the last few months.

In the largest increase since January, the Larson C ice shelf increased in size by 17 km. It is one of the largest recorded icebergs. This collapse will leave the ice shelf at its smallest ever recorded.

Ice shelf collapse can lead to other ice shelves also collapsing. It can also cause sea level rise.

Scientists are not sure of the cause but they believe a mixture of natural progression and human activities is to blame.
